Smart Autonomous Robot Navigation System for Handicapped Wheelchair

ABSTRACT

This research of smart autonomous robot navigation system is developed as a proto-type for a handicapped wheelchair. This robot navigation system is for indoor environment using distributed sensor technologies and equipped with wireless communication methods. The main goal of this research is to increase the comfortableness and user-friendliness to the patient. The system is fully automated, but the system also contained a manual controlling unit using IrDA. The navigation system can identify obstacles using its ultrasound sensors. The system also contained compass module, accelerometer and also gyroscope module. These modules help to identify the direction using the Earth magnetic field, tilts and the vibrations experienced by the device. The system can calibrate the compass module using a mathematical algorithm that using inside the program. At the cold start, the system must need a calibration to identify the magnetic field offsets for the particular environment, and it can be easily done by the user using a single button before using the system. The system also equipped with Bluetooth technology to update the internal software using a computer with Bluetooth.
